Key Stage 4
All pupils will take part in weekly debates on current issues and classic debates designed to challenge their own ideas and give them opportunities to express themselves. This will contribute to the public speaking element of the new English GCSE.
Year 9 will focus on: Speaking in front of a large audience of their peers and contributing effectively to a debate.
David Perks, Principal, studied Physics at Magdalen College, Oxford, and has been teaching for over twenty five years in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Harrogate and London. He is passionate about encouraging pupils to take part in debating. Giving pupils the chance to express their ideas in a public setting is the best way to critically evaluate the strength of your ideas. He originated the Debating Matters sixth form competition now run by the Institute of Ideas.
Ethics is about thinking about the choices we make. As such it does not give us answers but challenges us to think. Socrates is famous for annoying his peers by challenging their thought about an issue to prove they actually don’t know what they think about it. If pupils only get the idea that thinking about ideas is challenging task then will at least have gained a little wisdom.
